I wanted to disappear.
I was standing in line at the pharmacy, keeping my head down, hoping the fluorescent lights weren't doing what they always do to my face.
Then the cashier looked up and smiled.
"Oh honey, did you get too much sun this weekend?"
It was February.
And in that instant, I was 13 again.
Back to the nickname the boys in my class gave me the first time I blushed reading out loud: "Tomato Face."
It stuck for years.
The truth is, I've fought redness my whole life.
I started hiding it at 13. Hair down, head tilted, anything to cover my cheeks.
By my 20s, I carried a green color-correcting stick in every purse. I turned down wine on dates because one glass would light my face up like a stop sign.
In my 40s, I spent thousands on laser. Five sessions at $450 each. My face was swollen and bruised for days after every one. And within a few months, the flush was creeping right back.
I tried every redness cream at the drugstore. "Calming" serums. "Soothing" gels. Ice rollers. Cold spoons straight from the freezer at 7 a.m.
I gave up spicy food. Hot showers. Warm restaurants. I'd sit by the door at parties so I could step outside when the heat started climbing up my neck.
And then menopause hit.
The hot flashes made everything worse. The flush that used to fade within an hour now stayed all day. Tiny red vessels started showing up around my nose.
No matter what I did, the redness always came back.
Sometimes redder.
Sometimes blotchier.
Always back by lunch.
I felt trapped in an endless, expensive, exhausting cycle.
